This is the “local” version the Mt Mitchell ride starting in Sylva, NC and finishing at the Mt Mitchell State Park. This ride is mapped as a one-way ride, so one should plan on being picked up at the park. Once you get on the Parkway at Balsam you travel on it until the entrance on NC 128 to the park. It is free for cyclists to enter the park once you turn off the Blue Ridge Parkway onto NC 128. The mileage is 104 miles and the approximate elevation gain is a leg-breaking 12,500’. There are limited facilities on the Parkway, one of them being at the store located at the Pisgah Inn at around the 47 mile mark, but not near halfway there in riding time. Other facilities on the Parkway are the Folk Arts Center at about the 73-mile point and the visitor’s center just past the Craggy Gardens center (the one beside the road and NOT the one up the hill) at about the 90.5-mile point. Having SAG is highly recommended. This is an epic journey and should only be taken by those very serious about suffering. Enjoy!
